Impressive Homemade Coffee Liqueur Recipes

The original recipe for Tia Maria coffee liqueur dates back to the 17th century, though it wasn’t commercialized until the 1950s. Kahlua has been manufactured since 1936, and the world’s first Irish Coffee was served in 1943. While we don’t recommend a coffee liqueur on the rocks during your morning commute, there’s certainly a time and place for the timeless combination of two of our favorite beverages: coffee and alcohol.

One appropriate place for coffee liqueur is “at home,” and a corresponding time is “whenever you feel like it.” Don’t order marked-up coffee liqueur online or trudge out to the liquor store in the rain. With a few simple ingredients and a pint of patience, you can concoct your own coffee liqueur from the comfort of your kitchen.

Homemade Kahlua Liqueur Recipe

Combine a few essential ingredients to create your own twist on the go-to Mexican coffee liqueur. This baseline recipe is beginner-friendly!

What You Will Need:

4 cups of water

3 cups of vodka

2 cups of white sugar

2 cups of brown sugar

1/2 cup of coffee grounds

1 vanilla bean

First, pour both sugars into a large bowl and stir until mixed. Bring 4 cups of water to boil in a large saucepan and pour in the sugar. Stir the water until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Add your favorite coffee from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®. You can always play it safe with our fan-favorite House Blend Coffee or expand your palate with our distinctive Bali Blue Moon Coffee. After you’ve added the coffee, remove the mixture from heat and allow it to cool.

Cut open your vanilla bean and scoop the creamy insides into your mixture. Add the vodka and stir it in gently. Once all ingredients have been combined, pour your homemade Kahlua into airtight containers and let them sit in a cool, dark spot for two weeks for optimal flavor.

Chocolate Espresso Liqueur Recipe

Bump your coffee obsession up a notch with this decadent coffee liqueur recipe featuring a concentrated kick of espresso.

What You Will Need:

4 cups of water

3 cups of vodka

2 cups of white sugar

2 cups of brown sugar

1/4 cup of espresso

2 shots of chocolate liqueur

2 vanilla beans

A flavorful chocolate espresso liqueur begins and ends with high-quality espresso. When in doubt go for our signature Espresso Roast Blend — it’s assertive, expressive, and yet subtle enough to be enjoyed straight.

Combine the water, sugar, and espresso in a large saucepan and heat on medium-high. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce it to a simmer for one hour, or until the mixture reaches a syrupy consistency.

Remove the mixture from heat and allow it to fully cool. After it reaches room temperature, add the chocolate liqueur, vodka, and the insides of the vanilla beans.

Stir the mixture a few times and then store it in an airtight container for at least three weeks. During this time stir the mixture occasionally, at least once a week.

Coffee Liqueur Recipe Tips

As you embark on your coffee liqueur home-brewing odyssey, keep these barista best practices in mind:

  • Don’t skimp on the coffee. At The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®, we know where every coffee bean comes from, which makes our coffee uniformly delicious no matter what blend you crave. Your coffee beans will determine the flavor of your coffee liqueur, so rely on the top 1% of Arabica beans from the world’s best-growing regions.

  • How much should you spend on the vodka or spirits you’ll be using in your coffee liqueur? There’s no need to shell out for high-end ultra-expensive vodka, but you should also avoid anything you’d consider the bottom of the barrel. We recommend using medium-quality vodka with a neutral flavor for your homemade coffee liqueur recipe.

You can’t order a coffee liqueur at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® near you, but you can use our globally-sourced coffee beans to craft something truly special at home.
